LEGAL TERMINOLOGY OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Importance and Teaching Methodology

Summary

In today’s world of business, defined by open borders, market ex- pansion and a large number of international companies which operating in different business environments and legal systems encounter certain difficulties, there is a growing necessity for experts which being able to speak a foreign language can improve the company’s efficiency. Ability to communicate in mother tongue of a business partner is among key factors of success of any business person, including young lawyers. Therefore, teaching legal terminology of a foreign language, dif- ferent from standard language in lexis, syntax and style, focuses on acquisition of certain patterns used in business communication in a specific linguistic context, determined by professional profile of a can- didate. Being a graduated philologist, expert in certain language, the lecturer need not have a specific professional experience in business fields his lessons focus on. Consulting course books and additional materials adequate in terms of authenticity, relevancy and contempo- rariness, he presents and explains the lexis, helps students overcome language barriers and tends to include social and cultural aspects of that legal system.

Key words: business language, legal language, teacher, student, curriculum
